Writing prompts that hold up: a practical structure

A repeatable five-part prompt skeleton, plus the specific words that actually move image models — and the ones that do nothing.

By Ideovex Team

Most disappointing generations are not a model problem. They are an ordering problem. Modern image models read a prompt front-to-back with decaying attention, so the first fifteen words decide the picture and the last fifteen decorate it.

The skeleton

Write in this order, every time:

  1. Subject — who or what, with one distinguishing detail. a weathered brass diving helmet
  2. Action or state — what it is doing. half-buried in wet sand
  3. Environment — where, and the time of day. on a grey Atlantic beach at first light
  4. Camera and light — the two levers with the biggest visual payoff. 85mm, shallow depth of field, soft overcast light
  5. Finish — medium, film stock, or render style. shot on Portra 400, fine grain

Read end to end, that is: a weathered brass diving helmet, half-buried in wet sand, on a grey Atlantic beach at first light, 85mm, shallow depth of field, soft overcast light, shot on Portra 400, fine grain. Forty words, no adjective stacking, and every clause is doing a job.

Words that pull their weight

  • Focal length — 24mm gives you distortion and drama, 85mm gives you flattering compression, 200mm flattens and isolates. This single token changes composition more than any style word.
  • Light direction — backlit, rim light, window light from the left, single hard key. Naming the light is the fastest route out of the flat, evenly-lit look that makes an image read as AI.
  • Real materials — brushed aluminium, raw linen, cracked lacquer. Material words carry texture information that abstract words like "detailed" do not.
  • A concrete time — 10pm under sodium street lights beats moody lighting every time.

Words that mostly do nothing

masterpiece, 8k, ultra detailed, award winning, trending on artstation. These were load-bearing on 2022-era models. On current models they consume attention and contribute almost no signal. Drop them and give the space to camera and light instead.

Change one thing at a time

When a render is close but wrong, resist the urge to rewrite. Fix the single clause that is failing, keep the seed, and re-run. Ideovex keeps every run in History with its full settings, so you can see exactly which edit moved the picture — and Studio Presets will save the skeleton once it works so you are not retyping it next week.

When to stop prompting and start editing

If a composition is right but one element is wrong, a fifth rewrite is worse value than an inpaint. Mask the offending region, describe only what should be there, and let the rest of the frame stay exactly as it is. Five credits, one attempt, no lottery.
